How to confirm a WordPress outage

Check from outside your browser

Open the site in a private window, then run an external check. Local cache, ISP DNS, and browser extensions can make a site look down only for you.

Look beyond the homepage

A WordPress homepage may load while wp-admin, checkout, or important landing pages fail. Test the URL customers actually use.

Record the status code

HTTP 200 usually means reachable. 3xx means redirect. 4xx often means access or routing issues. 5xx usually points to server or application failure.

Common causes

Hosting or PHP failure

A plugin update, memory limit, or crashed PHP worker can trigger 500 errors while the domain still resolves.

DNS changes

A nameserver or DNS record change can make the site unreachable before the WordPress app is involved.

Expired SSL

If HTTPS breaks, visitors may see browser warnings and treat the site as down even if the server is online.
